The Unique Beauty of Green Sapphires

In the realm of gemstones, sapphires have long held a cherished place, often celebrated for their vibrant blue hues. However, a new star is rising - the green sapphire. Gaining popularity from 2024 onwards, green sapphires are emerging as a new choice for engagement rings, captivating hearts with their unique and natural beauty.

The Unique Beauty of Green Sapphires
Green sapphires possess a natural charm that sets them apart from their more traditional blue counterparts. Their hues range from delicate pastel greens to deeper jewel shades. The joy of green sapphires lies in their ability to capture light and exhibit a mesmerizing play of colour, often enhanced by subtle hints of blue or yellow within the gem.

Green sapphires are a captivating and somewhat rare variation of the corundum mineral, the same mineral family that includes the blue sapphire and ruby. Unlike their blue or red counterparts, green sapphires are coloured by the presence of iron rather than other trace elements.

The shade of green can vary from pale to deep, offering a spectrum of choices for those interested in this unique gemstone. They are often recommended for those looking for an alternative to more traditional gemstones or as side stones used to highlight and bring out the beauty of a diamond centre stone.

Do they make suitable engagement rings?

Unlike emeralds, (which we also love) but can be more delicate and prone to inclusions, green sapphires are part of the corundum family, renowned for their durability and hardness. This makes them an excellent choice for everyday wear, ensuring that your engagement ring remains as stunning and resilient as the day you first put it on. Like other gemstones in the corundum family, it’s extremely hard, scoring nine out of ten on the Mohs scale of hardness (a diamond, in comparison, is scored 10 out of 10).

Individuality
In a world where individuality is increasingly celebrated, green sapphires offer a refreshing departure from the norm. Their distinctive colour and rarity make them a perfect choice for couples who want their engagement ring to stand out. This unique appeal resonates with modern couples looking for a symbol of their one-of-a-kind love story.

Versatile Elegance

Green sapphires pair beautifully with a variety of metals and settings, from classic yellow gold to blush rose gold and platinum. Their versatile nature allows for creative designs, whether you prefer a vintage-inspired setting or a sleek, modern look.

Symbolism and Meaning
Green is often associated with renewal, growth, and harmony—qualities that perfectly encapsulate the journey of a shared life together. Choosing a green sapphire for an engagement ring can symbolize a couple’s commitment to growing and thriving together, making it a deeply meaningful choice.

Where Do We Source Them From?

You can find green sapphires in a number of locations around the world. Today, green sapphires are mined in nations such as Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Cambodia, Kenya, Zimbabwe, Australia and Brazil. Green sapphires are also mined in Montana, usually near the Upper Missouri River. We choose each gemstone by eye, and all comply with the UN Kimberley process.

Ethical and Sustainable Choice
All our green sapphires are sourced responsibly, with a focus on minimizing environmental impact and ensuring fair labor practices. Their organic beauty, combined with their durability and ethical appeal, make them a perfect choice for couples embarking on their journey of love and commitment.

As 2025 unfolds, green sapphires are poised to stay firmly in center stage, offering a stunning and meaningful alternative to traditional engagement ring choices. So, if you're ready to celebrate your unique love story with a touch of green, now is the perfect time to embrace the enchantment of green sapphires at Appleby Jewellers.
